Match the exact model and screen size, and use tempered glass with an alignment frame: handheld screens are large and flat, so a crooked fit is obvious. On a Nintendo Switch 2, fit the glass on top of the film Nintendo factory-fits, which the manual says not to peel off.
Screen sizes, so you buy the right glass
| Handheld | Screen | Protector note |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 7.9-inch LCD | Factory anti-scatter film, do not peel |
| Switch OLED | 7.0-inch OLED | Plastic screen; scratches easily |
| Switch (original) / Switch Lite | 6.2 / 5.5-inch LCD | Plastic screen; scratches easily |
| Steam Deck OLED | 7.4-inch OLED | Etched anti-glare on some models |
| ROG Ally, Ally X and Xbox Ally | 7-inch | Glass; the frame is moulded per body |
| Lenovo Legion Go and Go 2 | 8.8-inch | The largest mainstream handheld screen |
What's different about handhelds
- Thumbs rest on the glass. Oleophobic coatings wear faster here than on a phone, so expect to replace protectors more often. See oleophobic coatings.
- Docking and sleeves scrape the surface. A dock's lip slides across the screen every time you seat the console, which is the single most common source of Switch scratches.
- Some screens are plastic. Older Switch models use plastic, which marks far more easily than phone glass and makes a protector much more worthwhile.
- Anti-glare matters more. Handhelds get used on trains, in cars and in gardens. A matte protector costs you some sharpness; see anti-glare protectors.
Fitting a large flat screen
Handheld glass is bigger than any phone protector, so dust and alignment are the enemy. Fit it in a steamy bathroom, use the frame if one is included, and lower the glass from one end. Our installation guide covers the full routine, and dust under a protector covers the rescue.
Questions people ask
Do gaming handhelds need a screen protector?
More than phones do, in practice. Older Switch models have plastic screens that scratch easily, and every handheld gets scraped by docks, cases and thumbs.
Can I put tempered glass on a Nintendo Switch 2?
Yes, on top of the film Nintendo fits at the factory. The manual says not to peel that film off, because it stops fragments scattering if the screen breaks.
