Buy glass listed for your exact Ally. They all have 7-inch screens, but the bezels and grips differ between the original Ally, the Ally X and the ROG Xbox Ally models, and a protector cut for one can foul another's bezel. Choose a kit with an alignment frame.
The Ally family
| Model | Screen | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ROG Ally (2023) | 7-inch 1080p | The original; widest aftermarket choice |
| ROG Ally X | 7-inch 1080p | Revised body, bigger battery |
| ROG Xbox Ally / Ally X | 7-inch IPS 1080p 120Hz | Xbox-branded models; check cut-outs |
Protector listings often claim the whole family. That's usually fine for the glass itself, because the panel size is shared, but the frame in the box is moulded to one body. If the frame doesn't match your Ally it's no better than fitting freehand.
What wears an Ally screen
- Thumbs and sticks. Hands sit close to the glass, so the oleophobic coating goes first at the edges. See oleophobic coatings.
- Bags. The Ally's screen is the highest point when it's laid face-down in a rucksack.
- Docks and hubs. Cables and hub bodies get dragged across the screen on desks.
Matte or clear?
The Ally's screen is glossy and bright. A matte protector helps under strip lighting and outdoors, at the cost of some sharpness, which matters more here than on a phone because you're looking at fine UI text and distant detail in games. Most owners are happier with clear glass; see anti-glare protectors if glare is your main complaint.
Questions people ask
Do ROG Ally and Ally X use the same screen protector?
The 7-inch glass is usually shared, but the alignment frame is moulded for one body. Buy a kit that names your model.
Should I use matte glass on a ROG Ally?
Only if glare bothers you. Matte softens fine game and UI text, which is more noticeable on a handheld than on a phone.
