Run a hot shower for a few minutes and fit it in the steamy bathroom. Clean the screen with the alcohol wipe, then the microfibre cloth, then dab the whole screen with a dust sticker. Use an alignment tray, or the tape-hinge method, and lower the glass from one end. Press from the centre outwards. Most small bubbles clear within a day.
What you need
- The protector kit: glass, alcohol wipe, microfibre cloth, dust stickers, and a tray if one's included.
- A bathroom you can fill with steam, or any room with the windows shut and no fan running.
- Two strips of clear tape if there's no tray.
- A plastic card for pressing out air.
Step by step
- Steam the room. Run a hot shower for three to five minutes, then turn it off. The moisture settles airborne dust, which is the single biggest improvement you can make.
- Switch the phone off, or at least lock it, so touches don't open apps, and a black screen shows dust better.
- Wash your hands and dry them on something that doesn't shed lint.
- Clean the screen with the alcohol wipe to remove oils, then dry it fully with the microfibre cloth.
- Dust sticker the whole screen, not just the specks you can see. Tilt the phone under a light to check.
- Line up the glass. With a tray, clip it on and drop the glass into the guides. Without one, lay the glass on the screen with the backing still on, line it up, and tape one long edge to the phone's side as a hinge.
- Peel the backing and lower the glass from one end. Let it settle rather than pressing it down. The adhesive will spread across the screen by itself.
- Press out air from the centre towards the edges with the card wrapped in the microfibre cloth.
- Re-register fingerprints on phones with in-display sensors.
- Wait 24 hours before fitting a tight case, so the edges bond fully.

Curved and folding screens are different
These steps are for flat glass. UV liquid glass has its own process (see UV glass), and folding inner screens shouldn't be given a DIY protector at all: keep the film the manufacturer fitted.
