Outer 5.4-inch screen: ordinary tempered glass, once Duo-specific listings exist. Inner 7.6-inch folding screen: no tempered glass, ever, because it can't fold. Also think twice before adding any film: Apple gives the inner display a nano-texture matte finish, and a glossy film covers that finish up.

Unlocking is by Touch ID in the side button, not Face ID, so there's no front sensor area to worry about on either screen.
The outer screen: straightforward
The 5.4-inch cover display is a flat panel under Ceramic Shield 2, so it's like protecting any small iPhone. Once the Duo is in people's hands, expect Spigen, ESR and others to sell cover-screen glass with trays. Until then, be sceptical of anything listed before 23 October. Pre-launch protectors are cut from leaked dimensions, and leaks about the iPhone 18 Pro's front turned out to be wrong this year.
The inner screen: think before you cover it
Apple describes the inner display's nano-texture as a finish that reduces glare and reflections, creating a matte surface. Two things follow from that:
- Tempered glass is out. It's rigid and would crack, or stop the phone closing, the first time you fold it.
- A glossy film defeats the point. Light hits the film's shiny surface before it reaches the etched glass, so you're back to reflections. A matte film restores some glare control, but replaces Apple's finish with the film maker's.
Apple publishes no instruction for or against inner-screen protectors, and we won't claim otherwise. Our advice is to leave the inner screen as Apple made it unless you have a specific reason not to, such as sharing the phone with a child or working somewhere dusty.
A warning about listings: some Amazon titles call inner-screen products "tempered glass" when they're actually flexible film, often bundled with glass for the outer screen or the back. Read the product description, not the title.
Apple Pencil changes the picture later
Apple says the Duo will support Apple Pencil (USB-C) later this year. On iPad, many people who write a lot use a paper-feel film. On a nano-texture foldable, that same film would replace a surface Apple has already made matte. Wait to see how the bare nano-texture feels under a Pencil before adding anything. Questions people ask
Can you put a screen protector on the iPhone Duo?
On the 5.4-inch outer screen, yes: normal tempered glass. On the 7.6-inch folding inner screen, only flexible film made for the Duo. Glass would crack when folded, and glossy film cancels the nano-texture anti-glare finish.
When is the iPhone Duo released in the UK?
Apple lists the UK among the first countries: pre-orders from Friday 16 October and availability from Friday 23 October.
Does the iPhone Duo use Face ID?
No. Apple put Touch ID in the side button so it works the same whether the phone is open or closed.
